Ahar paper (also known as treated or sized paper) is the defining innovation that granted classical Arabic calligraphy and Islamic manuscripts their extraordinary ability to endure for centuries without losing brilliance or breaking down at the fiber level. Without the sizing and burnishing process (Taqaheer), the sharp stroke work of master calligraphers like Ibn Muqla and Yaqut Al-Musta'simi would never have reached us in pristine condition today.

The process of sizing and burnishing is far more than mere surface preparation; it is a specialized art-chemistry. It transforms ordinary porous, absorbent, and warping paper into an ivory-smooth surface over which the reed pen (qalam) glides effortlessly—allowing for precise ink scratching, scraping, and erasing without damaging the underlying fibers.

History and Evolution of Ahar Paper

The treatment of paper began as paper-making technology transitioned from China into the Islamic world during the 2nd century AH (8th century CE) via Samarkand. Muslim artisans quickly developed specialized sizing and polishing techniques tailored to iron gall ink, soot ink (habab), and the calligrapher's need for extreme precision and fluid re-inking.

  • The Abbasid Era: Early sizing formulas emerged using starch, gum arabic, and alum (shabb) to seal paper pores and stabilize ink adhesion.

  • The Ottoman Era (The Golden Age of Sizing): The art reached its zenith as specialized master craftsmen known as "Mutaqahirun" dedicated themselves to treating paper. They used egg whites and alum, leaving sized sheets to age in total darkness for years before releasing them to calligraphers, imparting a warm, parchment-like tone to the manuscripts.

Suitable Raw Papers for Sizing

The ultimate quality of sized paper depends heavily on the source fibers and structural integrity of the base paper:

1. Handmade Paper

  • Pure Cotton Rag Paper: Considered the finest base for sizing due to its long, resilient fibers. It exhibits exceptional water tolerance during starch and egg-white application, and easily withstands heavy pressure during burnishing with an agate stone.

  • Natural Plant-Fiber Paper (e.g., Kozo, Hemp): Handmade sheets featuring high tensile strength and flexibility despite being lightweight. They react exceptionally well to both classical and modern sizing techniques.

2. Fine Machine-Made Cotton Paper

  • Hot Pressed (Smooth Finish) Paper: Acid-free paper manufactured with a naturally semi-smooth surface, which drastically reduces the labor required during the final burnishing phase.

  • Cotton Watercolor Paper: Designed to handle heavy moisture without warping or lifting, provided it has an adequate weight (between 130 to 220 gsm) and is entirely acid-free.

1. The Classical Sizing Method (Traditional Egg & Alum)

The traditional method relies on 100% natural organic ingredients and requires meticulous patience:

  1. Preparing the Sizing Solution (Al-Ahar):

    Egg whites are separated and whipped vigorously until a thick foam forms. A small amount of crushed alum (dissolved in water) is added, acting as a natural preservative, stabilizer, and insect repellent. The mixture is left to settle until the foam subsides, yielding a clear liquid known as Ahar.

  2. Coating the Paper (Sizing):

    The paper is first coated with a thin layer of warm cooked starch to seal major pores. Once dry, the Ahar solution (egg white and alum) is applied evenly in uniform strokes using a soft sponge or cloth. This step is repeated two to three times, allowing the paper to dry between coats.

  3. Aging and Curing (Tateeq):

    The sheets are hung to dry away from direct sunlight and dust, then stored flat under heavy weights in a dark, dry environment for 6 months to a full year. This aging phase is critical: it allows the egg proteins to cross-link into a solid, water-insoluble film and eliminates residual moisture.

  4. Burnishing (Al-Masqala):

    The cured paper is placed on a smooth hardwood or marble board and polished vigorously using an agate burnisher (Masqala) or smooth glass tool. Heavy, circular pressure is applied until the paper surface transforms into an ivory-smooth finish with a subtle sheen.

2. Modern Sizing Methods (Varnish & Sealer Techniques)

To bypass the lengthy aging process required by classical methods, contemporary calligraphers have developed modern techniques using chemical mediums and water-based varnishes to achieve similar results in a fraction of the time:

1. Acrylic Water-Based Varnish Method

  • Materials: Water-based acrylic varnish (matte or satin finish), distilled water, acrylic paints or concentrated tea/coffee for toning.

  • Procedure:

    1. Stain the base paper with tea or coffee to achieve a warm, antique tone, then allow to dry completely.

    2. Dilute the water-based varnish with distilled water (1 part varnish : 2 parts water) to prevent a thick plastic-like film from forming.

    3. Apply the diluted varnish in thin, even coats using an ultra-soft brush or flat sponge.

    4. Once fully dry (within hours), burnish the paper with an agate tool or smooth glass burnisher to attain the desired smoothness.

2. Sealer and Cellulose Varnish Method

  • Materials: Water-based sealer or cellulose varnish heavily thinned with solvent.

  • Procedure:

    • Sealer is used to rapidly seal the paper's pores. A very thin mist or coat is applied; once dry, any slight surface roughness is buffed down using extra-fine steel wool (0000), followed by final agate burnishing.
