Traditional Ahar Paper (known as Waraq Muqahhar in Arabic) is a specially treated, hand-coated paper used in Islamic calligraphy and manuscript illumination. The term "Ahar" refers to the sizing process that seals the paper, creating a glossy, non-absorbent surface that allows calligraphers to write smoothly and easily erase mistakes.

Key Characteristics

Ink Resistance: The paper does not absorb ink, keeping lines sharp and preventing bleeding.
Erasability: Calligraphers can wipe away mistakes with a damp cloth or scrape them off with a blade without damaging the paper.
Longevity: The traditional chemical-free coating protects the fibers, ensuring the paper lasts for centuries without deteriorating.

The Traditional Making Process

Sizing (The Nasta'liq/Starch Coat): Artisans boil wheat starch or rice flour in water to create a thin paste. They brush this paste onto handmade paper to seal the raw fibers.
Glazing (The Egg White Coat): Once dry, they apply a mixture of egg whites (albumen) and alum (shab). The alum acts as a natural preservative.
Burnishing (Saqal): Artisans age the paper for several months to a year. Finally, they rub the surface vigorously with a smooth agate stone or sea shell to create a glass-like finish.
